Residents are being invited to pick up a free Surrey Trading Standards Service sticker pack from their local council offices, library or police station, as part of a new anti cold-calling trader campaign.

The initiative will aim to tackle the rising number of doorstep traders who prey on vulnerable residents and carry out shoddy work, often at extortionate prices. Traders who ignore the door stickers and requests to leave could be breaking the law.

The pack, available from 17 October, includes a new door sticker and advice on how to get help to deal with cold calling traders and how to report suspicious activity. It follows findings from the success of the no cold-calling zones in reducing doorstep trader incidents and making residents feel safer. It is hoped that the sticker scheme will allow other areas to benefit from reduced cold callers, to ensure resident and trader diligence across the whole county.

Kay Hammond, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety said: “We recommend residents use our list of vetted businesses from our 'Buy With Confidence' scheme to find trustworthy traders.”
