When Shepperton and District Business Community started to put together this year’s Big Tree Night, they were particularly keen that the evening would contain something for everyone. Six month’s later, the programme for the evening looks to have done just that.

The evening on the 14th December begins at 4.00pm with Christmas Storytime at the library for children aged up to 5. The hour will include reading of Christmas stories and some singing. Also, from 4.00pm, stalls will be open in the slip roads in the High Street. At the time of writing, 22 stalls had booked, ranging from food stalls to charities and reindeer food to local businesses. There will also be a few small fairground rides for younger children. Stalls will remain open until 8.30pm.

At 6.30pm, the event opens officially with the highlight of the evening. Three real reindeer will pull Father Christmas and a child in a sleigh down the centre of the High Street. The child will be the winner of the competition to design a poster for the evening that has been running in Shepperton for the last couple of months. The reindeer will be staying until 8.30pm with Santa at Santa’s grotto in order for children to be able to visit and pet them. Santa and his elves will also stay with the reindeer.

As well as the usual singing under the Big Tree, this year we will also be including
some of the children from local schools performing songs from their school plays. We wanted something for the adults too, so we will also be holding a Christmas party complete with live music and a bar. A group of superb professional musicians will be playing a collection of Christmas and party songs from 8.30pm. Tickets are £5 each. All proceeds will go towards the costs of the evening. Please email to express your interest and we will email you back with full details. Numbers are limited to 100 people so tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Most of the shops in Shepperton will be opening late and laying on something special on the night. Combine this with ‘Winter Wonderland’ themed fancy dress, shop window display competition and a raffle (tickets available on the night) with prizes including a 13lb bronze turkey, a £100 meat voucher, a £100 food voucher, 4 pantomime tickets for Cinderella at Richmond, several meals for two including wine and a family ticket for the Ice Skating at Hampton Court and the organizers are hoping that this year’s Big Tree Night will offer a full and exciting programme of events that are suitable for all age groups.

Proceeds from the raffle will be divided between the Shepperton and District Business Community, contributing towards costs for the evening and the charities represented in Shepperton High Street.
