Updated: Police release e-fit of abductor's van

POLICE believe a vehicle like this was driven by a man who tried to abduct a 14-year-old girl in Shepperton.

Nearly two months after the attempted abduction, which happened in Laleham Road on April 9 between 2.45pm-2.55pm, detectives have still to make a breakthrough in their search for the suspect.

They hope this image, based on the teenager's description will generate fresh leads.

A man has attempted to drag a 14-year-old girl into a car as she was walking in Laleham Road, Shepperton.

The driver – described as a black or Asian man – pulled alongside her in a white transit van shortly before 3pm on April 9, and pretended to ask directions.

Moments later he leaned out of the window and grabbed her hand, then attempted to drag her into the vehicle. There was a struggle and the girl managed to break free and run away.

The van, which is described as having sky blue coloured writing and a sky blue coloured pattern on the back and side, was driven off in the direction of Shepperton.

A friend of the girl's family, who didn't want to be named, said: "It's frightening to think this could happen in broad daylight. It's a difficult time for the family at the moment as it is, and this has stressed them even more. She was really shaken up, as you would be, and this bloke needs to be caught before she does it again."

Detective Constable Fiona Riley, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a concerning incident where a young girl has been approached by a male in a vehicle.

“This was obviously a very distressing experience for the victim but fortunately the suspect did not harm her. It happened very quickly and she was able to get to safety.

“I feel given the fact this incident took place in broad daylight and the distinctive markings on the suspect’s van, there is a good chance a member of the public may have seen or heard this incident taking place.

“I would also be very interested to speak to anyone who recognises the description of the suspect or the vehicle, as any information could prove vital to our ongoing investigation.

“We are continuing to carry out an extensive investigation into this incident, which includes house to house enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage in the area, and patrols in the area have also been increased."

Police are looking for a man aged 30 to 35, who is about 5ft 11ins, medium build with short dark hair and who was wearing a dark coloured top and jeans.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any further information should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference SL/09/2854, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 1111.
